Mrs. Scholz's classroom raised $733

Cost of Books..$600. Being Able to Read...Priceless!

My students need 12 copies each of 7 nonfiction books, including "Cities Around the World" and "Save the Sea Turtles", along with 2 sets of "6pk in Hiding: Animals Under Cover".

I am a 6th grade teacher in an small economically disadvantaged district located just outside of Detroit, Michigan. The vast majority of my students receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch. Many of my students live in homes with multiple extended family members due to job loss and home loss in the area.

Many of our students don't come to school having had a nutritious meal which also means they don't come prepared with basic necessary materials such as pencils and backpacks. Despite the income shortfalls, my students come to school and WANT to learn. There are numerous languages spoken in the various homes and it is sometimes difficult to communicate with parents. The parents in our community want their children to be successful in school, but are not always equipped to help them in some academic areas as they enter the junior high. We have many special needs students and many others who could use more individual attention, but their just isn't enough money to fund such programs.

Since there are a number of my students each year that cannot read at grade level in my science class, I decided to spend 2 weeks training this summer to learn how to help my low income students learn to read science and social studies material at grade level. The problem is that the books that I would need to go through the program are expensive and our district does not have the money to purchase them. I am willing to donate my time for the training and teaching of the program, but would find it very helpful to have the books funded through donors. I spend hundreds each year supplying pencils, notebooks and backpacks to needy students and with the economic crisis in our state I have to be careful about balancing what I provide for my students and for my children at home.

If you help by donating money toward the purchase of the $600 in leveled books it will help ensure that all of my students can become proficient in reading at grade level the informational text that they will encounter in my science class. Most of the reading we do in our lives is informational, yet many of my students can read the words, but cannot comprehend what they are reading. Your donation would help me help my students change that!
