We are a lively 1st grade class in an inner-city, arts-based school. While providing students with the academic knowledge that's required for their grade level, we work to nurture the whole child—intellectual, emotional, social, and physical—using a variety of teaching strategies. We use a multiple-intelligence approach working with students' linguistic, logical-mathematical, musical, body-kinetic, spatial, interpersonal, and interpersonal intelligences.

My philosophy of teaching includes fostering independence in my students. Part of this approach includes incorporating five daily literacy tasks for my students to choose from while I work with small groups. One of these daily tasks is listening to books on tape. My main obstacle is that our current listening center consists of one massive cassette player with two pairs of broken headphones. I think they are from the 70’s… really. It is sad. Half of the time we can’t get the tapes to play, and the rest of the time the tape player is eating our tapes.

I feel that one of the most effective ways for children to learn how to read is to follow along while listening to a fluent reader. If I were to receive two listening stations and sets of books with CDs, my students could use them every day during literacy time. This is more than a management system or a curriculum framework – it is a structure that will help students develop the daily habits of reading, writing and working with peers that will lead to a lifetime of independent literacy.

Listening to books on CD will provide an exciting, educational activity that the children will look forward to. Your help will ensure that my students are engaged in literacy activities every day.
