Reading, Here We Come!

My students need a variety of "just right" text that will help them become confident readers. When children and books are matched, children are able to extend their reading abilities and learn how to read independently.

Students learn to read and write by being surrounding by text. I work with a wonderful group of excited kindergarten students who are so proud when they can pick up a book and read it "all by themselves"! They are so proud!

Unfortunately many of my students do not have a lot of books at home to read. Approximately seventy percent of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch, which is an indicator of poverty. The books that they get to use from school, both during the school day and to take home with them, are very special to them.

I have collected a variety of books which I am able to send home with my students to read and return each night. They also choose these books to read during our Read to Self part of the school day. Unfortunately many of those books have been bought out of my pocket. This is money well spent but I can only do so much while still making ends meet for myself. The books that I am requesting would help my classroom library grow and would provide the students with more books at their level, which allows them to grow as readers.

All students should have the opportunity to surround themselves with good books! Please help me provide a literacy environment that will encourage them to be proud of their reading, while helping them grow to the next level. My students and I will be so grateful! Our brains and hearts will be so thankful!
