Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am about to begin my first full year teaching at a charter school in a high-need inner city environment. In spite of the challenges that I know I will be faced with this year, I am bursting at the seams to begin the new school year tomorrow morning. My first grade class is filled with some of the most energetic, vibrant, and intelligent students. I feel a great sense of responsibility to impart on them hope, knowledge and an integrity that will carry them far in life. As a mother myself, I look at each one of my students with the very same dream of success that I bestow upon my daughter. Some of these children come to me with baggage beyond my comprehension and still, they are thirsty for knowledge.

It is my firm belief that I AM preparing each one of my students for college. I express this desire each and every day because I am well aware of the possibility that I may be the only one who speaks of their future in terms of limitless possibilities. I got to work early and stay late knowing that one day, years from now, the time that I am investing now will pay off and some (maybe all) of them will return to bring tears to my eyes as I relish in the amazing adults they have become.

We are a society based on technology. Technology is woven throughout every career. It is imperative that I expose them to as much of it as I can. I have to integrate it into my lessons and design my lesson plans in a way that will create an enormous amount of opportunities for them to work with technology. We have two computers in our class and a laptop with a web cam. What I am asking for is a small projector that I can teach the students to use to present the many collaborative multimedia projects that they will be creating this year. I think it would be an invaluable tool to help prepare them for future experiences.

In a society where so much emphasis has recently been placed on economic hardships, the students in my class have known little else in their lives. My motivation in teaching is to open up windows of opportunity so they learn that their current hardships do not have to be future ones. Your generosity does not simply bring a projector into our classroom - it brings hope into the hearts of my students.
