Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach freshman and senior English, am the Poetry and Prose coach for competition as well as the Theatre director and teacher and the sponsor of the school book club. We are a high poverty rated school with a recognized standing in the state. Our students are wonderful and work very hard, but often lack the supplies to participate as they would like in extra-curricular and enhancement activities.

Book club offers students a chance to read books that are not on the school reading list and discuss those books. Students have the opportunity to learn about new authors and explore subjects and topics not discussed in the classroom.

To fully operate our school wide book club, we need at least 10 copies of each book Ironman by Chris Crutcher and Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. Students will have the opportunity to read the book as well as keep a copy to add to their home libraries. Researchers have found that the more books a child reads and essentially owns the higher their word knowledge is and better their comprehension and fluency becomes. Students read books and discuss to encourage reading as well as develop their comprehension and fluency. Young adult novels are quickly becoming the best way to teach students about real world events.

You will help make reading enjoyable and fundamental to my students. You have the opportunity to change the poor reading levels our country currently faces.
