Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work with the most wonderful set of first and second graders you can ever meet. My school is located in an area were the poverty level is very high. More than 70% of our students receive free lunch. This fact does not hold them back from doing their very best everyday we are together. Out second graders are starting to read in literature groups. They are expected to each have a copy of a book but we just don't have the resources in our school to purchase the sets of books. During reading class the students are usually all reading different books. The book discussions are good but it is often hard for one student to understand the other students point of view without having read the book themselves. Another problem is that often the students get so interested in another students description of the book that they want to read the book as well. With only one copy of the book it is often hard for the students to wait their turn to take home and read the treasured book. I need sets of book for my students. When each student in a book club has their own copy of a book they can add to discussion. Conflicting points of view will help them realize that books can be open to many wonderful interpretations. Each student will get to take the treasured book home and come back to school the next day with new and fantastic ideas to share with one another. With your help these students can finally get to read in literature groups all having their very own copy of a book. You will make it possible for the students to learn and listen to their classmates ideas and perspective on literature. Please help fund this project and bring great literature to our classroom.
