Making Our Mark: From Field Biology To A School Arboretum
My students need 7 field guides and other reference books on the plants of New Mexico
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Wright's classroom raised $354

Out on the reservation, we're taking science into the field, and bringing it back for the whole school.
My students attend a small alternative school on an Indian Reservation, where they face the daily onslaught of poverty and disenfranchisement that pervades so many reservation communities. But they are also surrounded by rich cultural and natural resources. As a biology teacher, I want to show them the wonders that surround them through new eyes, and to get them invested in sharing their knowledge and protecting the riches of their community.
My class plans to build a school "arboretum" of local trees, shrubs and wildflowers, complete with environmental information and the scientific, tribal and English names of the species. To do this, we will go on several field walks to collect and identify specimens. We need field guides and other resources on local plants to help us learn about these plants and make the arboretum a reality.
Your support will give my students the chance to learn valuable biology skills in the field, and to leave a lasting legacy for their school and community.
