As John Dewey said, “If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow.” I am in my 3rd year of teaching as a 2nd grade teacher. The majority of our school population is African American and Latino students; in addition to 75% of our students qualifying for free or reduced lunch.

For years, the number of students proficient and advanced on state testing has been below 50 percent at my school. My school’s mission speaks to educating and inspiring the whole child. This means we must address the different learning styles the students come to us with and acquire or create the resources necessary to do so. Lack of exposure is a reality at my school and within my classroom; it affects vocabulary/reading and writing, particularly. The students struggle with imaginative storylines because of lack of exposure to things outside of the community. We live in an information age. Conversations around preparing our students for the 21st century speak to the technological age we live in. My school lacks the resources to meet our students where they are at and prepare them for this technology-filled world.

Interactive white boards have been known to change the way one teaches and learns. Reports have shown how the interactive white board allows a classroom to be more student-centered and project based. With this board, my students’ exposure will increase—from virtual field trips to technological visual aids. This exposure will increase academic skills and thirst for learning. One of the districts’ goals is to increase student achievement through joyful learning. Engagement is important for students to retain information. Research on the effects of interactive white board highlights the student motivation that comes with having this resource. The interactive white board is perfect for addressing the multiple intelligences of my students to help them be successful. With the different learning styles there are, it is challenging to meet those with basic supplies, such as paper and markers. Technology allows you to address all of the learning styles—from visual to musical to logical. Along with the learning styles, the interactive white board allows me to achieve the technological standards set forth and to play a role in preparing my students to compete in the 21st century.

“If the entire community works together to integrate technology into the curriculum while focusing on self-discipline and practicing effective communication skills, our students will definitely be prepared for the 21st century.” (Preparing Students for the 21st Century) I want to offer my students access to resources to help them be successful. Please help me to do so.
