Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 7th Grade Math/Science at a small, new charter school that serves a high-poverty, high-needs community.

Our school just moved into a new building. The space is very exciting for the students, the teachers, and everyone involved in the school. However, since the middle school has only been open for one year, and since we just moved into a brand-new location, we have extremely limited curricular resources. The school's budget is very tight, and we simply cannot afford the lab equipment that is imperative to a rigorous, hands-on, experiential, lab-oriented classroom like ours.

In order to create those experiences, especially in a life-sciences class, we will be doing a number of plant and animal dissections which require the use of stereomicroscopes. This will let my students experience science as true scientists do - through their eyes and hands, connecting their academic learning to the labs that we do, solidifying their learning and provoking further questions.

You will make it possible for my students to use equipment that they have never had access to, that engages them in the classroom, expands their understanding of concepts, and empowers the classroom as a space for rigorous scientific discovery and inquiry.
