Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

These 23 wonderful 4th and 5th grade students live in a high-need an urban neighborhood. Many of these children have minimal experiences in the area of environmental issues. It would be critical for them to have hands-on learning experiences in order to make sens of their role as keepers of the planet.

Twenty-three eager students show up to school every day ready to learn. They are hungry for experiences that can help them learn in a very tactile, hands-on way. Environmental studies are part of our curriculum and we would like to be a part of an Inquiry Conference here at school. The many topics that fall under the category of "Saving the Environment" would offer them a variety of subjects to pursue. We have little to no materials in our building and this would be a terrific opportunity to let them dig deeply into a topic and make sense of it in their everyday life. It's stirring the passion toward good stewardship to our planet.

The Investigation Kit sets up several different hands-on lab experiments to explore water quality, land fill, recycling, air pollution, and soil types, and the effects on different ecosystems. The videos help them visualize these topics in the real world. The recycling chart would help them understand the importance of what happens to the products used in their households.

This could be a life-changing experience for many of my students and their families. It will lead toward a better understanding of individual and group roles in environmental issues. It will also give them an active part in their own learning and the structure of a scientific investigation. This type of project is what school is all about. Please consider helping these children by making this project possible. It will change lives!
