Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Have you ever felt a live sea urchin? Or a sea cucumber? Have you ever stood on the beach and watched birds searching for food in the waves? I teach fourth and fifth grade in a moderate poverty area. Some of my students have never been to the seashore.

Our beaches can be wonderful places to learn about our world, or they can be places filled with trash. Every time it rains, everything on our streets is washed out to our beaches through our storm drains. Everything from dog poop to plastic bags is right there with us when we visit the seashore.

How do we stop that from continuing? We teach our children to stop and think before throwing things into the street. We teach them how to recycle things. We teach them to be aware of and care for the world around them. Heal the Bay and the Key to the Sea Program at the Santa Monica Aquarium shows children how to become future stewards of the environment. Through hands-on activities, the program shows children how they can protect themselves from the health risks of exposure to polluted waters and how they and their families can make a difference by preventing pollution. They get to see a wonderful aquarium where they can touch and connect with the wondrous life in the sea.

Children need to be aware that one person can make a difference. You can be that one person that makes a difference to a whole classroom of children. Let's make the world a better place together.
