Hands On Botany Through Colonial (Organic) Gardening

My students need a variety of garden tools, 15 gro-bricks for soil amendment and an outside storage unit.

I teach 5th grade Science and Math at an incredible full-time academic magnet center for highly gifted and talented students.

We are integrating our Math/Science instruction with our Social Studies focus on life in Colonial America. This year our students are very interested in Botany in general, and "organic" or "green" growing methods and how various growing practices impact the environment - particularly runoff & the health of our local watershed/bay. The kids have proposed that we plant gardens like the Colonial Americans would have. They have researched the crops that can be grown at various times of the year in our area as well as some of the various "natural" ways in which Colonial farmers tended/fed their gardens and fields.

Our amazing parents and community volunteers have built us 6 4'x 8' raised beds. A local nursery has agreed to supply us with young plants as they have surplus, and horticulturists from the extension office are available to support us as we have organic gardening questions. Our compost pile is brewing. Now we need the equipment to work our gardens and a place to securely store our materials!

The students I work with are curious, intense and seldom complete a Science investigation that does not immediately lead to another question. These are the future scientists of our country, and stewards of the Earth. Meaningful projects, such as this, that are proposed by them and fueled by their curiosity are vital in order to sustain and build their enthusiasm and engagement. Through this project they will not only become better scientists, they will practice working as a member of a team, develop better communication skills, and experience the satisfaction of reaping the benefits of hard physical labor.
