Wiggling Our Way To A Great Garden

My students need 2 Worm A Way composting bins and a refill coupon to develop a greater appreciation of how recycling can enrich plant development.

I teach a group of 5th grade students in an urban setting who have expressed an interest in doing more than just recycling paper. During the 08-09 school year, a school wide recycling program was started. I was amazed at how interested my students became in making sure paper didn't go to waste. I would like to show my students another way that they can help the environment through the benefits of composting.

We recently added fire belly toads to our classroom and the students quickly did research to find out if they were boys or girls, what they liked to eat, how big they will get..and even visited a 1st grade class to share this information (they also have fire belly toads). When I mentioned the idea of working with worms, my students' got very excited! This hands-on experience will enrich their learning and allow them to take ownership of what they learn.

Through a variety of projects the students will learn how to successfully compost and share this knowledge with others. I will have them research red wigglers and techniques of composting. Once our composting is underway, we can integrate math through weighing and tracking the amount of worm castings we collect. We are in the process of creating a butterfly garden and will be able to use the worm castings as natural fertilizer.

Your help in supporting this grant will bring an unlimited amount of learning opportunities to my students that will span all curriculum areas. This project will create a sense of unity among students as they work together to see the benefits of composting, and create a sense of pride, knowing that they are helping our environment.
