Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Let us do it, don't just tell us!" That's what middle schoolers say about their science classes. With my 6th and 7th grade science students at our 38% (and climbing) free-reduced lunch school, i.e. moderate poverty, students crave learning through doing. "No more lectures and worksheets - we want activities and labs". These are quotes from our 11-13 year old learners.

So many learning activities involve talking, reading and writing. But what about all of those students who need to touch and do to really get a concept. Teaching students to "think scientifically" is challenging unless they have a genuine problem to solve. Mastermind game is an awesome analogy to learn scientific, deductive thinking.

Ask any one of my students and they will enjoy and remember learning how to think like a scientist by playing a genuinely challenging game. The game Mastermind requires players to use cumulative "evidence", your scores, to deduce what the possible solutions to a problem are. Evaluating evidence to fit proposed scientific explanations is in our state science standards and kids "get it" when they play this game!
