Take Home Literacy Bags to Help Families Read Together

My students need engaging and interesting books such as "Today I Feel Silly," and "The Counting Book" and activities such as, "What's Hiding Kits."

My Students

I teach an extraordinary group of 2nd graders who have amazing potential. Our elementary school is in a small town in Minnesota. The tough economic situations in the county and community have a hue impact on our school. Many of my students' families are struggling to make ends meet.

My students are life long learners, looking for ways to learn.

I believe the take home Literacy Bags will increase parental involvement, and the students ability to learn since the bags will be already planned out and all they have to do is open it up and dive in. In 2010 and 2011 45% of the students at my school were receiving free and reduced lunches.

My Project

The Literacy Bags I plan to create would include 3-4 books on a topic of interest to my students (which they will read and enjoy with their parents), follow up hands-on activities will also be included in the literacy bags. Also, perhaps a journal for the parents and child to insert what they learned or enjoyed most about the literacy bag. I believe this idea will provide parents with quality literature and activities to guide them to function as teachers for their children, and it will hopefully increase the amount of time parents spend with their children and literature. Your generous donation will help students experience the joy of reading at home with their families, and it will encourage them to become life-long readers.

My students need interesting books, that will promote them to be life-long readers, and promote family involvement.
