Read All About It!

My students need 10 copies of Current Health and 26 copies of Weekly Reader News for expanding their reading comprehension skills and acquiring real life reading experiences.

""Children from deprived backgrounds performed better in tests than those from more affluent homes if they enjoyed reading books, newspapers and comics in their spare time. There was also some evidence that reading newspapers, magazines and comics could be just as effective as reading books."(http://www.literacytrust.org) In school, teachers and students read from long text such as novels and chapters in our content area books (science and social studies). Yet if we want to prepare our students to be part of the "mainstream", reading in school should closely reflect "real life" reading known as short text. It is reported that about 80% of adult reading is in the "short text" form: magazines, newspaper articles, cookbooks, brochures and reports. These short text materials are ideal for teaching reading comprehension because: - It can easily be read aloud to benefit everyone in the classroom - It is well written with photographs and illustrations for added details - It is authentic and prepares kids for "real life" reading in their older years - It can be reread readily to help with confusion - It provides, in a quick way, various styles of writing - It allows the teachers to truly stick to a "mini-lesson" (research says children need a "cognitive rest" every 10 minutes) However, school administrators are mandated to buy textbooks, trade books and basal readers for the classroom. By the end of all this purchasing, their money has dwindled down to a few dollars here and there. Our class would like to supplement our classroom library with some quality childrens' magazines that would provide more models and resources. For the best lessons, these magazines could be checked out, or even adopted, by children with little or no reading material at home (a big problem at our school with our student population.) The staff at our elementary school educates a diverse community of 456 Kindergarten through 5th grade students from five urban neighborhoods in North Carolina. Eighty six percent of our students receive a free or reduced lunch, 65% of our students are African American, 5% are multi-racial, 20% speak Spanish as their primary language and 10% are of European descent. For a relatively low cost, these short text materials can provide a wealth of material in our classrooms. This "wealth" includes up to date material for lessons, short text authentic reading and material to put on the shelves in the homes of our students to continue to promote real life reading.
