Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 12th grade AP English students are working hard to be college-bound because they understand that doing well this year is essential to future academic success. Our school does not have a strong-college-going culture, and these students make sacrifices, in terms of both their time but also socially, to be involved in college-prep classes.
This year, my students will spend one unit focusing on expository writing because research has shown that without a good grasp of expository text, students struggle in college-level classes. Unfortunately, our school, which is relatively new, does not have a lot of access to core literature. Each year we try to acquire one class set in order to fulfill the needs of our students.
With "In Cold Blood," my students will have an opportunity to examine how non-fiction writers approach story telling, and how they integrate factual information elegantly and beautifully into expository pieces. These books will be used not just by my 65 AP students, but also the other honor's composition classes at my school.
