My students need yummy rewards and incentives that also give them some cultural insight into German-speaking countries.

The quickest way to a student's brain... through the stomach, of course! I teach four levels of high school German at a rural-suburban high school in Indiana. Many of my students have never been out of Indiana, let alone the United States.

One thing that ALL of my students show an interest in is food. Learning about culture is something that never grows old for my students and that makes their language learning even more fun. I used to be able to use part of the fees that students pay to buy candy for incentives and rewards, but that is no longer an option.

I would like to use this grant to buy candy and chocolate for incentives and rewards for my students. It is amazing how the promise of a one-ounce piece of chocolate can make students so much more motivated and engaged in class. Sometimes I give candy for students who I hear talking German when they don't "have" to. Sometimes I give candy as a prize for a game we have played. Sometimes I give candy to reward a student who has really improved his performance in some way. Sometimes I give candy to a kid who looks like he's having a really bad day. The possibilities are endless and keep my students on their toes. Sure, lots of candy isn't good for kids, but in this case, a little goes a long way! But if I am going to give candy away in class, I don't just want it to be any candy you could get anywhere, I want it to have a cultural connection. The candy I would buy with this project is all candy from German-speaking countries. So their reward is special to them and special to the language they are learning.

Your help will allow my students to experience a little bit of German culture through food. It will also help to motivate and reward each of my students.
