Breaking Through

My students need 60 copies of the book Senderos Fronterizos by Francisco Jimenez, which they will read as a novel in class this year.

This project is fully funded

I work at a school, which is a low income, high minority school. I teach two sections of 30 students. We are one of the only schools in the country to have a full track of Native Spanish Speakers course offerings. Because many of our students are immigrants, or children of immigrants, in Spanish for Spanish Speakers Level 1, we will read "Breaking Through" (Senderos Fronterizos) by Francisco Jimenez. The book is a memoir of the author's experiences in middle school and high school as a second language learner. Students will read this novel in order to understand how immigration has affected famous Latinos, and connect their own experiences to the author's life. Concurrent with each chapter, we will discuss new vocabulary and reading skills, and use author experiences to write our own memoirs about our own experiences in school and as bilingual students. I would like a copy for each student to be able to take home to read as homework, so that we will use class time for discussion and hands on work with writing skills.
