I teach 5th and 6th grade Math and Science in a charter school. Ninety five percent of our students are African American and 100% of our students are receiving free or reduced lunch.

Many (about 90%) of our students come from either a single parent home or they are placed with other family members (Aunts, grandparents, Uncles, Sisters...)due to situations out of their control. Many of our students lack the organization skills that they need to be successful students due to not having the experience of organizing. They often come to school with papers everywhere and are at lost when they are to take things a specific assignment out of their bags. Some often give up on doing the homework because they can't seem to find it after they are done with it.

One way of helping my student stay organize is to model and practice this skill. I plan on purchasing binders and dividers for each of my students so they are able to separate homework from classwork from notes etc... I am requesting a letter sorter to sort out the paperwork that the students had turned in that contains feedback from me, placing the student work into the mail slot of a mail sorter so students can pick up the work and place it into their binders. I will have a few students, on a rotating basis, file the papers, and placing them in the mail slots. Everyone else will have the responsibility of checking their box, picking up the papers, sorting what is important, and placing it into their binders for reference.

Your help will ensure that my students are able to develop the skills and habits be successful students. As adults we know how important it is to be organize. It is a skill that is priceless once it is developed and maintained correctly.
