Meteorologists Making Movies

My students need two digital cameras so students can document the weather and see why the weather actually matters and how it can be connected to real-life for them.

Mrs. Russ Lakewood Elementary School
Durham, NC Grades PreK-2

I teach second grade in North Carolina. Actually, I don't just teach second grade. I teach curriculum and concepts from kindergarten and beyond. I teach about amphibians because my students are curious about them. I teach handwriting, because many of my students don't have pencils to practice letter formation at home. I teach how to problem solve, so my students can be positive members of society. My school is 50% Hispanic students and 50% African American. The free-reduced lunch rate is over 80%. Many students come from homes where their caretakers are illiterate and working most of the time. A large portion of our population are 'latch-key kids'.

My students are extremely engaged when we are using technology and when we are learning about science. Unfortunately, they see science as chemical explosions and technology as video games. I want to expose to them all the ways science effects our everyday lives as well as technology. On several occasions I have allowed my students to use my camera to express what they have learned in science and it has been highly successful. One time in particular was during our science unit about weather. My students researched different regions of the world and their climates. They then got to come up with their own country and respective climate to match where that country is located. They then studied meteorologists and forecasts so they could come up with their own weather show for their respective regions that they researched. Unfortunately, our school has one digital camera which does not have video capabilities and they were left to my sole camera. I feel with more cameras they would be able to look again at their forecasts, revise them, and engage in more projects like this.

Every spring the second grade at Lakewood Elementary teaches weather. The unit often becomes tiresome and monotonous after the first two weeks of just observing the weather outside over and over again and we want it to be engaging daily. We want the students to see why the weather actually matters and how it can be connected to real-life for them. All we need is two additional cameras so the students can tape themselves doing a weather forecast. This will help them see that cameras are not just toys and science is not just about explosions!

With your support, my students will be given the chance to experience an authentic science based learning project that will enhance their understanding of weather as well as technology.
