Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This year, my third grade students and I are working to implement literacy centers that will both strengthen their reading fluency and their strategies and skills. I teach in an urban district where mandates are often changing, but the materials to carry out these ideas effectively are limited.

I have worked hard over the years to build a good classroom library with my own money. Although I have many titles at different reading levels, I do not have multiple copies to place in centers for group reading. It has been especially hard this year since our budget was cut after we submitted supply order. Therefore, items I had been expecting will never arrive. So far this year, my students have been sharing one book in the listening center and listening to my recorded voice on tape.

It would be better for each student to have their own copy of the book on tape. We need multiple copies of books and audio tapes at various reading levels to best meet the needs of our inclusive classroom. Books like Julius the Baby of the World and Frog and Toad will also encourage making connections and other strategies we will be working on this year.

Your help will make it possible for my students to have their own copies of books during listening center and other group reading time. This will go a long way to improve their fluency, strategies, and skills and their overall reading comprehension. Most importantly, I hope that it will make reading fun!
