Learning About Molecular Bonds

My students need a molecular model kit, a conductivity tester, velcro, gloves, and chemicals to make organosilicon oxide.

I teach Chemistry at an Alternative School. The students who attend this school typically do not learn best by "sit and get" (listening to lectures and copying notes). They learn science best by DOING science. One of our required standards is to develop an understanding of the structures and classifications of chemical compounds. Students need to learn to predict the type of bond a compound will form (either ionic or covalent), to explain how bonding affects the physical properties of the compound, and to model molecular structure (based on the number and types of bonds). My students struggle when concepts are only presented as abstract ideas or pictures in a book. When my students do laboratory investigations, the material "comes alive" to them. They are more interested and achieve greater understanding. With the materials I have requested, we will be able to conduct several laboratory activities in our class: 1. Creating Covalent Bonds: Students will create a silicon compound (organosilicon oxide), which is used to make “bouncy balls”. 2. Physical Properties of Ionic and Covalent Bonds: Students will use a conductivity tester to determine whether dissolved compounds conduct electricity or not. Students will use Velcro to model the comparative strength of intermolecular bonds (as well as intramolecular forces). 3. Modeling Molecules: Students will use “ball and stick” models to make representations of ionic and covalent compounds, including organic compounds. By providing our class with materials for students to DO science, students will have a greater understanding of the concepts they need to learn in order to be successful in this class and future science classes. By doing hands-on science, my students begin to believe that they can be real scientists and continue on to higher education. They become more engaged in learning and more successful in school. It is important for students to pass Chemistry, because students are required to pass three lab sciences, including Chemistry, in order to graduate high school.
