My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations, but they have also not yet met Douglas Adams.

My students are some of the bravest and toughest young men and women I am blessed to know.

Most face a family life in which they are resigned to expect struggle, poverty, hardship, abuse or any combination thereof. The school in which I teach is rural, with a seemingly insurmountable force of gravity acting upon young lives. Bless their hearts, thoughts and dreams of what is outside this community are non-existent. Works of fiction (especially fantasy and science fiction) are regarded as a waste of time, of which the less said the better. Farm manuals, tractor instructions, agricultural almanacs, Facebook notes and the "Local Sports" section of the weekly Review: these are the main intellectual fodder of the county youth. Further, we are located in the Bible belt. As such, the response to non-Biblical literature is, in general, disenfranchising.

My Project

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams, is a champion of all things and personalities which have been remanded from this small, rural community. The Earth's (much less this community's and country's) centrality and chief importance in the universe is challenged. The story is a humorous one, seemingly without bounds and unrestricted. It is a text in which anything is possible and, perhaps, even probable! This text pushes readers to see anew: our place in the universe, the views of others, the irony of existence, our view of the future and much more.

The education and development of the youth of our nation intellectually and spiritually is paramount to ensuring that the world be populated with good, intelligent, inquiry loving, thinking and contemplative citizens.

A novel which forces the reader to think "outside the box," Douglas Adams' "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is the perfect work for my students. Regardless of the size or nature of the gift, "Don't Panic." Thank you for your attention and consideration.
