Native Americal Perspectives

My students need 31 copies of "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee".

Ms. Johnson Harrison Park School
Portland, OR Grades 6-8

I teach 8th grade Language Arts and Social Studies (both subjects to the same group of kids). Our school serves a high need community, with over 80% of our students receiving free or reduced lunches each day.

With so many of my students being immigrants, they are very interested in U.S. History (our 8th grade history curriculum this year), but do not know much about it, especially the Americans who were here before Europeans came.

A class set of the novel, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, will bring history alive for my students so they can learn about Manifest Destiny from the Native American perspective. One of our 8th grade standards is to compare works of different perspectives of the same events. Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee will give my students the chance to read the Native American perspective, in addition to the more common European perspective.

By donating these books, you will make it possible for my students to gather information outside their textbooks. They will relate to the novel in a way they cannot relate to a textbook. Thank you for providing this opportunity for my students.
