Imaginary State: Make an Atlas

I am asking for world maps, United States maps and two globes. Currently my Fourth Graders do not know the difference between a continent, a country and a state. It is difficult for them to grasp these concepts with one outdated world map and one globe which I purchased with my own money two years ago. The new world maps, USA maps, and globes will enable them to work in small groups to do geography work and prepare them to begin to focus on their own state and complete the project I have designed for them.

I work in a school that is 85% free and reduced lunch which equates to high poverty. I have taught all over my city, but I choose to work with these children. The way I see it, they deserve great teachers too! In schools without poverty issues, parents supplement supplies. At this school, teachers spend their own money on supplies or go without. My students are so excited to learn about where they live and the world at large and ultimately their own state.

This project will teach them about map scale, compass rose, longitude and latitude, different purposes for maps and at the end of the project, they create an atlas. All they need are some maps and globes and they will have a hands-on experience of their world.

Your help will ensure that my students have current models of maps and globes to use which will make their learning concrete. My project will go deeper in teaching my students about their world, country and their state.
