Helping Kids Cope With Loss

My students need 27 literature books that will help them understand and deal with the pain of loss.

A student's brother is killed in a drive-by shooting. A father leaves his family and the tearful daughter comes to school feeling abandoned and unloved. Bear, a fourth grader's dog, is killed running across the street. These are real situations that three of my students were confronted with last year. Sadly, children at the school where I teach are often forced to deal with loss at early ages. I am a teacher at an inner city Title I school where 87 percent of the population is at the poverty level. Most of the students are from single parent homes, and on many occasions I have had to comfort and help children trying to cope with major losses in their lives.

The loss of a loved one is a stressful event for anyone, but it is especially difficult for children to deal with the range of emotions that are part of the grieving process. Whether it is the loss of a beloved pet, relative, friend or parent, children need support and an outlet to express their feelings. A teacher is often the adult most aware of a child's pain because of the daily interactions in a classroom setting. It is important that those needs are addressed so that the child's capacity to thrive in school is not compromised.

Dealing with loss through literature is an excellent outlet for students as they relate to the stories. Using books is an effective way to encourage students to express emotions and feelings as they relate to the situations of loss in the stories. I would like to purchase books which will help support students' emotional needs as they struggle through periods of grief and loss.

Your generous support will provide materials to help students work through the grief and impact after a loss.
