Kindergarten Basics

My students need 18 basic writing materials which include paper, pencils, scissors, glue, crayons, chart paper, glue tops, and construction paper.

I teach in a five year old kindergarten classroom. Most of our students come from low income families that do not have the funds for any extras, which unfortunately to many, means school supplies. Ninety three percent of our students receive free or reduced price lunches. Paper, scissors, glue, and crayons are not one of their parents' highest priorities.

We have had MANY budget cuts over the last few months. We were told last week that all funds have been frozen and we will not be receiving any money for our consumables that we need to use every day.

Our basic supplies are running low and we have only finished the first grading period of the 2009 - 2010 school year. Parental donations are rare in our district. The basic supplies that I have requested will help my students become better readers and writers. We write daily. The children love to create stories and draw their own illustrations.

Your help and support of this project will help 23 kindergarten students build a firm foundation in their reading and writing skills. Thank you for your consideration.
