Can You Be The Iron Chef of Culinary Arts Competition?

My culinary arts students need an assortment of cooking supplies, including skillets, aprons, bowls, a timer, a wok and serving resources.

I am the high school culinary arts chef instructor for a small country school district in South Carolina. We are a priority school with 3 schools in the district. My food lab and class room are located about 4 miles from the high school. I instruct culinary arts I and II in basic to advanced culinary arts skills in career preparation and college training. These students are in 9th to 12th grade and most of them are classified as disadvantaged students and about 99% Afro-American. I have several special education students mainstreamed in my program. These students need a lot of hand on and visual theory training to build skills for future employment and possibly college.

My small rural district is awesome and they have purchased me a TV, a fully working computer, and DVD player for the next school year. With a small operational budget, state budget cuts, and having to set back 4,000.00 a school year to for the propane gas to heat our water and cook with, and when I purchase food and paper supplies, it leaves very little for extra items we need. I depend on finding other funding sources to improve what exposure my students receive as to what the show learn or work with in a two year program. The classes need to learn how to compete in cooking competitions that are held across the country at student organization regional, state and national levels. Last year I did an Iron Chef of Breakfast Omelet cooks competitions in all classes. The students had limited things to work with, and had no uniforms which I am correcting both areas, and used judges to put outside pressure on them to develop their cooking and competition skills.

This goal of the grant is to provide them most of the tools and utensils they need to compete in the practice competition and prepare them for a professional skill level.  We need fry/sauté pans, spatulas, eggs separators, hand whips, cutting boards for each student, towels, chef hats, knife sharpening tool, mixing bowls, a timer, display trays, and napkins for the judging area.  They will plan out what designer omelet they are going to make.  Print the recipe, one for them and the other for the lead judge.  Students will organize their area, prepare their special selection, and follow all safety and sanitation procedures.  Each student will have to fold a napkin for the judges,  The judges will pick the Iron Chefs out of each class and do the award ceremonies. The culinary student will have a lesson on food garnishing book and later garnish their food plate. It is one thing to have me watch them, but the picture changes when outside judges watch their every move. We had on young man who made his omelet with uncooked sausage due to being nervousness. If they get to a regional or state competition late in the year, this exposure will take the edge off and they can show their skills.

The school has never competed in regional, state or national cooking events and I am taking them towards this goal. At prior schools, I have many regional, state, and national winners. With donors like you and the Donor’s Choice organization, I can complete areas of student training from that when I start the school year, reality set in, and I realized that with out help I could not achieve the things I wanted to get done at this school. I know I can not give my students the same experiences the larger districts give them, but I am out there every day trying to advance them and to launch them into a career position or help them get to a culinary school.
