Do You Hear What I Hear?

My students need 30 headphones to use in our computer lab and with our classroom computers so that they may work independently on their projects and not be distracted by other students who are using the computers.

Ms. W. Wellborn Elementary School
Anniston, AL Grades 3-5

When you mention our school to people who do not know what our students and teachers accomplish, they scrunch up their nose and state, "how could you possibly teach there with those kids?" I am a Fourth Grade teacher in a unique school. We are a high poverty school due to the fact that over 80% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. We also have a large percent of our students who are not living with their parent/parents due to a variety of reasons. Yet, these students (and their teachers) strive to excel at everything they do. I teach two classes of math and science and one class of social studies to a lively and inquisitive group of Fourth Graders. My students do not always realize that they are in high need situations because their lives have always been this way. A lot of them do not have any home support for school work and rely on their teachers to "step up to the plate" for them.

I am fortunate to be able to take both classes of math and science to our computer lab daily. However, have you ever been in a computer lab where up to thirty Fourth Grade students are working on projects, power points, photo stories, or computer programs that allow them to work on their individual academic level? It is extremely difficult to keep them focused on their computer and not distracted by what they are hearing from another computer. We also utilize classroom computers and now you do not have just computer competition, you also have class teaching and learning, group discussions and computer activity competing.

We need to have thirty sets of working headphones so that each student in class may have their own set to use. If each student has their own set of headphones, they will take ownership, take care of the headphones, be able to work independently, and stay focused on their computer activity. These headphones will be the solution and allow these students to excel as they utilize computers.

You have the ability to make a difference to these students and effect them for the rest of their lives. You will enable them to use technology in an effective way that will help them be successful in school and as they become productive members of society.
