Children's Chorus

My students need the following materials to launch their chorus: 1 radio with iPod dock, 3 microphones, 1 rhythm kit and 2 cases of CD's.

I am an Academic Intervention teacher. Our school is a community that empowers children to learn through the process of discovery and exploration and to think creatively and analytically. Our goal is for our students to blossom as authors, fine artists, mathematicians, critical readers, worldly historians, and responsible and thoughtful community members. Our standards-based curriculum recognizes that all children can learn when they have clear expectations and rigorous instruction. Our arts program gives us the opportunity to educate the whole child by combining the arts across the curriculum to create exciting learning experiences, which will enhance student engagement and maximize learning. In our school, children, teachers, administrators, parents, and support staff are part of a supportive community that works, learns, and grows together. At the conclusion of the school year, our staff issued interest surveys to our students to gain a better sense of what subjects, topics and professional fields they wanted to learn more about. After analyzing the interest surveys, we discovered that a large majority of our students were eager to learn about music, particularly singing. In response to our students’ interest, our school will launch “Our school's Children’s Chorus” in the fall. The mission of our school is Children’s Chorus is to educate, develop and inspire talented students to attain personal success. Our goal is to use the power and joy of music to unite our students and inspire social change in our community. Through participating in our school's Children’s Chorus students will learn music history, artistic excellence, discipline, develop leadership skills, and proudly represent Bedford Stuyvesant as ambassadors of hope. The chorus will be comprised of approximately 20 students, in grades 3-5, who will audition to be members of the ensemble. Throughout the year, students will be introduced to music in a variety of genres and from diverse cultures. For example, chorus members will explore African/Caribbean folk songs, Native American chants, traditional Latin music, gospel hymns, show tunes, and more. The chorus will be regularly called upon to share their talent with the school community by performing during assemblies, and other school wide celebrations. Also, President Obama recently charged Americans to embrace a new spirit of service by sharing their time, resources and talents to help rebuild and strengthen communities across the country. Our school's Children’s Chorus members will rise to action by participating in numerous service learning projects throughout the year. They will perform at senior citizen centers, other public schools and special events throughout the community. We need your support in order to make the children’s chorus a huge success. We are requesting funding to purchase essential items that will ensure that our teachers are properly equipped to provide students with quality music instruction. Our program aspires to use music as the universal language to support our children, who are essential parts of our community. Together we can create infinite possibilities for the future all children.
