Rock, Paper, Scissors...........Go!!

"Rock, Paper, Scissors....Go!" just as this playful hand game is a staple of childhood antics, so should crayons, paper and scissors be principal components of kindergarten age children's 'toy chest'. Sadly, they are not! This lack of childhood basics sets this young population up for lower achievement levels, in this high poverty urban Pennsylvania school, before they have even begun their formal education.

This current generation of children is proficient with technological gadgetry, but operate at a real deficit with other items that were very typical and representative of childhood play in the decades preceding the electronic game explosion. Those fine motor skills that are developed through coloring, drawing, cutting and pasting are still needed in the 21st Century. Not possessing these skills places the child at academic risk the moment he/she walks through the kindergarten doorway. Research has proved innumerable times that drawing is a first step in the development of reading and writing skills.

Parents of children classified as ‘free or reduced lunch’ will often use whatever limited financial resources that are available for entertainment to buy TV or handheld gaming systems for family usage rather than coloring books and pads, crayons, pencils, markers, scissors and glue for individual child usage.

Much grant money is provided for technology, math and science, but the ‘basics’ are frequently overlooked. However, it is precisely these basics within the first formal year of public education that provide the foundation for future learning. The local education agency does provide these items for in-school use by the Kindergarten population. Sadly, these items cannot be sent home as they will not be returned. A ‘set’ of these items at home, that you can make possible for my students through your donation, would not only enhance what takes place and is taught at school, but would also provide a much needed avenue for creative expression and the honing of fine motor skills.
