Pennies For Peace: Service Learning and Global Citizenship

My students need 24 copies of Three Cups of Tea, Young Readers Edition, and one audio CD of the same book to prepare for our service learning/global citizenship project.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Learning about the food and dances of another culture isn't enough to create true global citizens. But how can a teacher truly help her students gain a global perspective? Let's discuss that over our third cup of tea!

I teach gifted education in New Mexico.

My school has a very economically and ethnically diverse population. My students are very kind and empathetic, but I have noticed that many still carry stereotypes about people different than themselves. They are bright, hopeful children. Some of my students are quite poor, with parents working two or three jobs. Others have almost any material item they could ask for, but perhaps don't always appreciate it. What they all have in common is great potential.

My Project

Volunteer vacations have had a tremendous impact on my life. Participating in daily village life in such places as Kenya or Belize has greatly expanded my horizons. I have also learned first hand that true development comes from doing with, rather than doing for. I have been looking for ways to teach my students about “the world of differences we all have in common” in order to help them expand their own horizons. I also want to involve them in service learning. Greg Mortenson's story will very much help me meet both those goals, while touching my students' minds as well as their hearts. My plan is to create book clubs in my fourth and fifth grade classes. Students will read and discuss Greg Mortenson’s Three Cups of Tea, Young Readers Edition. I will then facilitate as the students lead a school-wide “Pennies for Peace” service learning project that raises money to build schools in Afghanistan. Students will learn a very important life lesson: They CAN make a difference!

In 2009, I heard Greg Mortenson speak, and was very much inspired by his "Pennies for Peace" project.

I learned that many young people who have participated in this endeavor have gone on to create their own service projects that made a difference in another's life. I would like to give my students an experience in which they can not only make a difference right now, but one that may also open doors to a whole new world for them.
