Three Cups of Tea--Fostering Cultural Understanding

My students need 35 copies of the Young Readers Edition of "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortenson.

We are an 8th grade Pre-Ap United States History class in Texas, learning the skills needed to be successful in high school Advanced Placement classes.

Throughout the year, we have studied the history of the United States and have learned about the opportunities that our country provides for us. Our teacher introduced us to the work of Dr. Greg Mortenson, a former mountain climber who has devoted his life to building schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. We are intrigued by his story and would like to read more.

We plan to read "Three Cups of Tea", Dr. Mortenson's first book in May. While reading the book, we will learn about the lengths that people go to in order to attend school and learn about another culture. We will also create a fundraiser provide school supplies to the students of his schools. We are asking you for a donation of these books for the entire class.

Dr. Mortenson's book is required reading for military personal headed to Afghanistan. His peaceful approach to solving the issues in this impoverished region is unique and admirable. Dr. Mortenson suggests that it we need to think in terms of generations when trying to affect change in this part of the world. By providing my students with a chance to read this book, their generation will be inspired to help promote peace with books, not bombs.
