My Honors World Cultures students are dynamic and thirsty for knowledge, especially about the world beyond Pennsylvania. This particular course is for 10th grade students.

Although my honors students are bright and eager to learn, most of them have had an extremely limited view of other people and cultures. They are predominantly white, Christian, lower-middle class students and arrive to my class with many preconceived notions about other religions and cultures. Throughout my year with them, I constantly seek to open their eyes to recognize stereotypes and fight against them.

The book A Long Way Gone is a well-written and moving personal account of a child soldier and his struggle to move past those difficult and defining moments in his life. In my opinion, it provides a better picture of an issue like child soldiers than I could ever provide with my second-hand presentations. I plan to use this book when teaching about modern conflicts in Africa. This book is a personal account of a child soldier who has since moved to the United States and achieved incredible things given his difficult first several years.

Your help will assist me in encouraging open-mindedness, tolerance and social justice in my students. I think it is very important to not only educate students on the "facts" but also to encourage action in them to better situations throughout the world.
