My Students

Fifth graders are tricky. They are not little kids anymore and they aren't teenagers (well, at least we know they are not!). They can sniff "fake learning" from a mile away! They want the real thing - whether it be learning with real money, looking at real pictures, or playing real games.

I have a diverse group of fifth graders at our rural elementary school.

Our populations is mainly Caucasian, with high populations of Hispanic and Hmong students. Many of my students have supportive families, and many do not. All of them have great potential and are such funny, intelligent children with high hopes. Many of my students are above grade level, and many are below grade level. All of them want to succeed. Many of my students are good at school and like to be organized. Many of my students struggle in school and spent a lot of time in a state of disorganization! Regardless of their families' level of involvement, abilities, race, religion, or level of goofiness :), they all truly want to learn, but they often need special help to get there. Fifth graders are also at an interesting crossroads between early childhood and adolescence. My class is no exception! They are struggling to begin to find themselves as their interests begin to expand and their perspectives of the world.

My Project

Ten and eleven year Olds love real things - they like when learning has a clear, real-world purpose and mimics things they may even learn at home. Using games like Apples to Apples will allow me to use real-world games that they could play at home to teach important reading skills. Apples to Apples seems like a simple game - players try to match various people, places and things to to adjectives they think would best describe them - but it really requires some complex thinking skills. The goal of the game is to get the judge to choose your object as best deserving the given word! It can become a heated debate and can make you laugh your head off too! Using two different versions of the game (one for 7+years and another version for 9+ years) will allow me to differentiate game play for all learners. Using Clue will help students to develop inferencing and the skill of elimination.

Today, this project may help one or more of my students to better understand language and in turn, become a better reader.

Tomorrow, this may help one or more of my students to understand something complex. Understanding and being able to work with analogies is a complex skill that both requires and promotes higher level thinking. In the future, there is no telling what the experience of playing a simple family board game could help my students do....be a rocket scientist? Teacher? President? :)
