Why Can't We See the Fish?

My students need a water quality kit so they can test their local canal water and attempt to solve the pollution problem.

When my students asked me if I knew why they couldn't see the fish in the canal anymore, I knew we had to do something to find out what the problem was. I teach Science to 6th and 7th grade students in a Florida middle school.

The overdevelopment of our community and poor planning has caused our local canal water to become murky and polluted. The students want to know why they can't fish or swim in the canal anymore. They are motivated to apply the scientific process they have been learning about to solve the problem and remediate it.

Our area has been severely affected by unemployment and foreclosures. There isn't much money around for teaching supplies. This water quality test kit will empower the kids to apply science to a real life problem that is affecting them.

Your help will make it possible for students, at the critical middle school age, to discover how science can be relevant in their lives. This will open up a world of career opportunities to them in their education when they prove to themselves that they are not only able to do science, but they can be scientists solving an actual problem!
