Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Give 3rd grade students a new way to listen to books and develop a love for reading! I teach a 3rd grade class with special education and ESL students in a high need, low support school.

My goal as a third grade teacher is to instill a love for reading in ALL my students. One way I do this is by using books on tape. My students love listening to the books because it is something different. I love them listening to the stories because they get to hear how well-developed readers read and get the opportunity to hear books they may not be able to read on their own. The problem is they are still having to listen to these stories on tapes! Many of them come to my class struggling to use a tape player but when you hand them an MP3 player, they know exactly what to do! We do not have any players yet for them to experience this.

With continued pressure to amp up the technology used in the classroom, I feel this is an ideal way and one the kids will truly enjoy! We need MP3 players with headphones and 3 audio books. The players I chose allow two students to listen to the same story at the same time. They then can discuss as they listen or after they listen to the story. The great thing is that by receiving these MP3 players students will not only be able to listen to the books but then later record a book review for their fellow classmates!! Many of the students I teach are labeled special education and have difficulty reading. This gives those struggling students the chance to enjoy the same reading material as their fellow classmates which in turn will help them feel more confident in participating in class discussions.
