I teach 450+ students at a Title 1 school just outside a major urban area in Georgia. My students come with lots of dreams, lots of obstacles and lots of creative energy. My classroom is a bit different than many art rooms because my students are artists from the moment they walk in the room. I guide them, teach techniques and vocabulary, and ask questions to help them think about their work carefully. My student artists create their own work from their own ideas. This way of teaching helps them find their unique creative voice and take responsibility for their work and ideas.

This past year I used my personal camera to document student art throughout the year. Many of the students really liked getting to see how their artwork had changed over the year when we made CDs of their work in May for them to take home. This year I want them all to make a portfolio of their art so they can see that progress through out the year. My camera is small and has limited capabilities and I need it for things other than my classroom so it wasn't always available when we could have used it.

To create portfolios my students need a digital camera of their own with enough memory to hold a full day's worth of student art. We need the neck strap because it is always better to be safe than sorry with elementary artists. Being able to take their own pictures and create portfolios through out the year will help my students think about their artwork critically as they compare their current work to past projects and help them envision ideas for their next work.
