Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach fifth grade in a Title I school in California. This is a school that serves more than 95% English Learners from working class families. This community is built by African Americans and immigrant families from Mexico, Central America, Southeast Asia, as well as Eastern Europe.

I have a class of enthusiastic fifth graders who come from diverse cultural backgrounds. However, my students have limited access to ACADEMIC background knowledge. One of these learning challenges is geography. Therefore, while they are eager to learn about the world, they have trouble attaching learned concepts with geographic orientation. This creates significant disconnect in many history, science, culture, math, as well as language arts lessons.

In order to provide my students with equal access to academic background knowledge in geography, I will need a globe and a set of mounted classroom maps. With these resources, I will be able to give my students concrete visual representations of our world. Having this background knowledge, my fifth graders will develop stronger geographic orientation for learning.

Your generous contributions will provide my students with greater understanding of newly learned concepts in many different subject areas. With these new geographic learning tools, my students will be able to access the knowledge needed for future learning success.
