We are a feeder school to two of the larger low-income housing developments as well our surrounding low- to middle-income neighborhood in the southeast corner of this city.

Our school has worked hard in building our students literacy skills. We have used our budget to purchase class set dictionaries for our high-skilled students as well as our low-skilled students, including our English Language Learners. Though this an excellent achievement, these dictionaries make it difficult to access quickly and effortlessly, all the Latin and Greek root words that our students encounter in a biology course.

I teach biology to English Language Learners and AP Biology to those who choose to and the common thread for these students is their need to understand what this biology language is. The "Dictionary for Word Roots and Combining Forms" will make this accessibility easy for all of my students rather than simply looking up the word in the textbook which doesn't always help our students make sense of the word and what it means.

Your help will ensure that my students do not just learn biological terms from rote. This type of learning most probably allow them to pass a quiz or exam but in the end, how much have they really learn? Having the skills and knowledge to break words down (decipher) to their roots will give them the power to better understand and have better retention of terms and processes that are related to these scientific terms. And, as they leave high school, they'll continue to encounter vocabulary that is based on Latin and Greek roots.
