I teach 1st grade in rural Northern California. I teach in a small school with approximately 170 students. I have 17 students in my class and 1/3 of my class are English second language learners.

This year our school district purchased the rights for Accelerated Reader(AR) tests. We have been using AR for the past few years, but we were always limited by either a lack of books or a lack of tests for the books we did have. We now have over 100,000 tests, so I would love to add books to my classroom library that will coincide with tests available. I find that at the 1st grade level that students will read a book every day or two, so having a large library is essential. I hope to use these books in the classroom as well as for home use (I would like to send these books home for parents and students to read together).

My 1st grade class really enjoyed participating in the Accelerated Reader program last year but were frustrated with the lack of books available at their level. The books chosen for this proposal would be great beginning level books for 1st graders who are acquiring the skill of reading. The books chosen for this project are easy readers that focus on high frequency words and spelling patterns. Students need to read, read, read to become better readers. These I Can Read books will give my students a chance to read, read, read. Because these books follow the rules of phonics, students feel successful when reading them which continues the cycle of learning. Reading and being successful when reading will lead to confident readers.

By fulfilling my request, you will be putting quality books into the hands of my students. Students will not only read the books, they will be taking comprehension tests on them. By adding these books to my classroom library, you'll also be giving students and opportunity to interact and read with their parents when reading the books at home.
