Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a mix of 9-12 grade ESL students from beginner to advanced both during the regular school week and in a Saturday enrichment program. Ours is a high need school that strives to provide quality learning experiences to its students. When I first became a teacher I had many questions. How can I convince defeated students that their work is worth keeping? How can I document the growth of a struggling student? How can I clearly explain the deficits and progress of a student to a parent or administrator? How can I support the development of organizational skills? The answer was portfolios. My students need the basics, sheet protectors, and binders. These are the tools that will allow them protect, organize and present their work with pride, and most importantly, keep their work. The message I want to send is that their work has value, it shouldn't be crushed in the bottom of their bag, left on the floor or tossed in the garbage. I truly believe that portfolios teach purpose. Your help will make it possible for my students to compile their work in a professional manner. Pride, purpose, and professionalism is the message you will send to my students.
