Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In the current testing-obsessed culture of American education, students (especially English Language Learners) need a variety of methods to measure their mastery of content standards. This proposal with provide my students with the tools they need in order to show their understanding of American History. I teach US History to eighth grade students in Southern California. Many of them are learning English as a Second Language, or have recently promoted out the the English Language Learner program. Others receive Special Education services for ADD, ADHD, or other learning disabilities. The middle school I work in has sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. The vast majority of the students in qualify for and are enrolled in the reduced lunch program.

Since many of my students are not familiar enough with academic English, they have a limited ability to both understand and then process the content I teach them in the classroom. In teaching them, I have worked to provide many visual aides and other multimedia to bring American History to life. Not only does this engage them, but they also understand the content better. I want to broadly measure just how much my students understand in the classroom. Requiring tests and essays may help for some, but many others may get left behind. I want to unleash their creativity in expressing their understanding of the History Standards they have learned in class.

I have a few projects in mind that will help my students represent their understanding of American History that engages both their visual and verbal abilities. One is a travel brochure that students will create for the original 13 colonies. They will research various aspects of the colonies, and then present them in a travel brochure meant to attract people to their colony. I will also have the students create a board-game on the American Revolution. The squares will represent various battles and individuals in the War, and students will have the opportunity to do so in a creative manner. As an added benefit, the students will work on these projects in pairs, so English Learners will have the chance to improve their speaking abilities while processing the academic content.

With your partnership, my students will have the supplies they need to successfully create projects that not only represent what they learned, but will also give them a chance to do so using skills that aren't measured or revealed with a multiple-choice test. I believe that every student, when equipped, has the chance to express some creativity regardless of their language ability or background. Giving them the basic supplies of paper, scissors, glue, and crayons will take them a long way in processing and sharing their success at learning.
