Reading is Succeeding

My students need any and all books that will get them to read! I am looking for book bundles so that my kids can read a new book each month.

Baltimore, MD Grades 6-8

I am teaching 7th grade social studies in a high poverty region at a Title 1 school. The school has not met AYP for a long time and I am a new teacher. My students are about 90 percent African American and almost 100 percent of students are on the Title 1 meal plan. The school has been taken over by the state because of its inability to meet adequate yearly progress, with about 75 percent of the staff being replaced.

My classroom is empty! I am a brand new teacher and completely broke. I am from Teach for America and have learned a lot about the importance of literacy in the classroom. I have come to realize how important certain skills are to students at every age and it all starts with reading. I want my kids to have every opportunity to read, but I do not have the funds to start my classroom library. I have not met my students yet, but I want them to have every opportunity that students in a higher income areas would have. It isn't their fault that they were born in a low income community, but school should be a place where they can be treated fairly and are not judged by where they were born or what their family structure looks like or whether they eat three meals a day. Teaching 7th grade is a great opportunity because it's the year students should earn their best grades so they can apply to the best high schools, so I want them to be as prepared as possible to get into the high school of their choice that will put them on the path to college or a vocational career. I want them to grow up to contribute to their community, not end up in prison.

The book bundles will provide my classroom with a great start to my classroom library! I am a firm believer that literacy is the key to being successful in every subject. I think that my students will succeed in every subject they are taking with the support and encouragement to read. I know that with the whole school supporting reading, we can meet AYP in no time. Our kids have the potential, it just hasn't been pushed to the level our students need. I want to make a difference in the lives of my students, and I believe that reading is the first step.

Your help in the form of donations will bring my students one step closer to realizing their academic potential. There is a direct correlation to literacy and being arrested. If you are educated and literate, you are much less likely to be arrested than those students who are not literate. I want my kids to have as many life options as possible and you can help me get them there! I believe with all of my heart that these students are capable of doing some amazing things. They just need other people to support them and believe in them too. Please be that person and donate to my classroom. Change happens one step at a time and this is our first chance to put our shoes on and get moving!
