Terrific Texts For Talented 10th Graders

My students need 25 copies of "The Giver" and 25 copies of "Lord of the Flies".

Students like learning when they love what they're reading! Last year, I taught ninth grade English in a high-need community in our nation's capitol. This year, I have the pleasure of following my students to the tenth grade!

While nearly half of my students have special needs, they can and do learn. The learning does not always come easy, however. Many of my students are not on a 10th grade reading level. At times, simply reading the text is an obstacle which prevents students from being able to actually engage with it. While our school has a variety of fiction texts, many are on a reading level that is too high and at an interest level that is too low for my students.

Even though my students face challenges, they have shown me that they will participate and engage with a text that they enjoy, which is why I hope to acquire 25 copies of The Giver and 25 copies of Lord of the Flies. The Giver asks the essential question: "Is life really life without experiencing pain?" With so many of my students having lost a friend or family member to violence, I am interested to see what conversations may arise. Students will create their own utopia projects. These will help show students that utopias do not exist in real life, because everyone has a different idea of perfection. In addition, Lord of the Flies draws parallels to my own students' lives. Sometimes extreme circumstances can cause children to grow up too fast, and at times we must make difficult choices in order to survive. Students will create their own forms of government, including a law-making body and descriptions of how laws are created and enforced. This project will help show students that leading a government is more than just nice suits and big houses. It's hard work!

I know that they will really dive into these books. More importantly, they will be able to learn from them while enjoying themselves at the same time. Your help will make this proposal into a reality. Thank you!
