I teach Kinder to 8th grade Spanish in a high-need community were about 90% of students live at or below the poverty rate.

Teaching only comes when a relationship based on love and trust is established. This is my second year teaching at my current school and I believe that the students are understanding that I am here to stay and teach them my language and my culture because I know they are capable and will greatly need it as they become adults. Every morning I greet them with a smile, a warm HOLA, and sometimes a hug to greet them into school. The best part now is to hear them greet me back with the same enthusiasm and in Spanish! Currently my school has had some position cuts and I was asked to teach K-5th in addition to teaching 6th-8th. WOW!!! I do not have enough materials to match the educational needs of my students.

This new change is welcomed but I need help obtaining resources to teach all the students. Research shows that children learn through the use of music and based on this I have incorporated songs into all of my lessons and have even begun taking guitar lessons so that I can accompany my students with an instrument. Already I hear students singing all of the songs I have taught them! This is why I am asking for a classroom guitar and songbook because I currently use a borrowed guitar. I would love to bring music into my room, especially now that our music position has been cut. Also, I am asking for an area rug to meet the needs of my smaller children and to create a comfortable reading space for all students. The carpet will create a place for my younger students to learn while sitting on the floor while we sing, dance, and read with our big books. For the whole classroom it will be a comfortable place to relax and enjoy a great book! The Spanish bingo will provide fun activities that promote Spanish while learning vocabulary. Finally, the bulbs will give us the opportunity to use our classroom overhead again!
