My students need 1 copy each of 26 book titles from the Rotten Ralph and Rotten School Series.

I teach 4th grade bilingual students. We are a large urban school with over 500 students, 95% of whom are of Hispanic origin. Our students' parents have come to the United States to make a better life for their families. We are a neighborhood school in a Hispanic community. The neighborhood thrives with working families, local restaurants, shops, and service centers. It is a bustling but conservative area. The neighborhood streets are alive with remodeled homes in warm southwestern colors and textures. On December 26, 2007, our school sustained substantial damage due to an accidental fire. Every book, pencil, piece of paper, computer, desk and chair were destroyed by the fire or suffered smoke damage to the point of being unusable. We have tried to rebuild our school and classroom libraries with quality books that will help the children gain valuable vocabulary and comprehension skills.

We need early chapter books. R.L. Stine is a wonderful writer whose books appeal to older elementary students whose reading skills are low. I see the lower achieving students struggle to read and how they wish they could read the "Goosebumps" books. Those books are too difficult and the children are frustrated. However, with the Rotten School Series and Rotten Ralph books, these children will feel that they can read books that appeal to them rather than just books they can read in their developmental zone. These books will meet their need to raise their interest reading level.

You will make it possible for these students to know the joy of learning how and loving to read. This is their last chance. They are still young enough to take a risk without fear of other children making fun of them.

Your generous donation will provide my students with 26 books that will keep their interest in reading alive. The children are so grateful for the quality literature; they compare books and talk about authors. The other day, a student from another class asked to borrow one of my Stine books. He said he would return it in 2 days and he did!
