Books That Look Like Me

My students need books with African American characters. I want them to see to see their beauty and heritage reflected in print.

Detroit, MI Grades 3-5

My students live in a very impoverished part of Michigan. How poor are we? We were recently ranked the poorest urban city in the country. One-third of the families live below the lowest poverty index. Our school is a Title One school with over 90% of the students receiving free lunch. Many families have lost all of their income due to layoffs in the auto industry. Unemployment checks don't cover much, and rent and food come first. These kids are coming to school with a lot to worry about, would you help me make their world a whole lot brighter?

To make matters worse it is a well known fact that my district is broke. Vendors won't even accept the district's checks. There is no money for pencils, pens, and notebooks, much less books for classroom libraries. But does this stop us? No way! These kids love to read! They read when they are finished with their work, after testing, after lunch, and at home (thanks to a "Donor's Choose" check out system). They are on fire!

My students need books. Lots of books. Books that show African American children playing sports and having adventures, fantasies and their history. We need books of poetry that show the beauty of people of color.
