Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

People often jokingly refer to Texas as its own country. I teach first grade in a poor area of a large city in Texas. I want to teach my students the greatness Texas has to offer, as well as its place in the United States and the world.

First grade is a time to learn about your place in the community. Without having a physical means to show the students where they live, it is impossible for them to gain a sense of what the world has to offer. Most of my students probably will never leave Texas. I hope to inspire them to dream of seeing other diverse cultures. By showing them where Texas fits in to the United States and how the United States fits in to the world, I believe they will dream big.

I plan to begin teaching my students how Texas fits in to the United States by having a map of the United States on their story time rug. Each student will be able to choose a state on which to sit. When we have our library class, each week a different student will select a book about a different state in the United States. This will be read on our story time rug. Once students have mastered their knowledge of how Texas fits in to the United States, I will show them how the United States fits in to the world on a globe. Students will then begin to read stories about children in other countries. In sum, a rug with a map of the United States and a globe will provide the physical means to demonstrate the importance of their local, regional, and global communities.

By providing a U.S. map rug and a globe, you will enable my students to dream beyond Texas.
